Fleur Lerwill
2018 candidate for City of Marion.
Heritage survey responses.
Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
I am a great believer that the facilitation of opportunities for cultural pursuits, as is evident from history, is a most important component of community development. On a personal level, whenever we travel, we always visit the historical sites and museums relating to the specific area. For example, having recently visited Norfolk Island, the museums and related tours collectively make educational information available by rediscovering the places and people of the past. A further example is the Marion Cultural Centre, currently the subject of controversial debate, It serves as a meeting place for the community and we attend Open Mic nights, activities and events and enjoy a meal and a coffee at the Cafe. Built over 17 years ago the Centre reflects a unique architecture. To solve the various concerns and challenges relating to heritage issues community engagement and consultation is key and I would suggest that discussion groups should be the first step in the resolution process. And I would work with relevant parties through advocacy, clear communication and productive relationships with our stakeholders. I cannot promise you that I will solve every problem. But, as is evidenced from my activities, I can promise you that I will work tirelessly for this community. I will listen, learn and understand. I am committed and accountable, accessible and visible. And because communities matter, I truly believe with the community’s help, together, we can make a difference. I trust this assists and please keep in touch.
