  1. Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
    Definately. DPTI can not be trusted to adequately protect our built and cultural heritage. It is to be hoped that the Marshall Liberal Government is not held captive to the demands of the development industry.

  2. In your opinion, has the current system of local heritage protection served your community well?
    My experience in Burnside would suggest that it has served the community increasingly poorly. In Victor Harbor there is a fracturing of heritage protection because of the multiple agencies protecting local heritage, particularly with regard to Granite Island and the Causeway.

  3. Should councils reject proposals to list local places of historic merit simply because an owner objects?
    There needs to be a genuinely independent umpire to impartially adjudicate owner objections to local places historic registration.

  4. Should neighbours of local heritage listed buildings have a right of appeal on development applications that propose demolition?
    Depends on how you define neighbors. If it is only the immediate neighbors that have appeal rights, then the greater community will loose its right to object.

  5. Should buildings listed as Contributory Items in your council area receive better protection?
    Currently the development industry is being given almost free reign to destroy what it likes. This must change if people-centric development is to be restored.

  6. Do you agree that places proposed for listing by your council as Local Heritage or Contributory Items should be subject to review by DPTI? Or would reviews be more appropriately conducted by an independent source of expert advice?
    An truly independent adjudication panel would be the way to go. DPTI will bow to their Minister's wishes.

  7. Would you like to see your council work more closely with the National Trust of SA in protecting heritage, for example, by signing up as one of the Trust's Civic Partners?
    No

  8. What are your personal suggestions for improving the way your council handles policy and planning?

  9. Should councils actively encourage individuals to nominate places for consideration as local heritage?
    The council should carry out periodic reviews of local heritage to ensure that all local heritage places are considered for inclusion.
