1. What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
   I believe Council's have a fundamental role to play in protecting and conserving heritage. It is important to ensure that our social, cultural, pastoral and industrial heritage is preserved respectfully for current and future generations.

2. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
   Community involvement & engagement Promote ownership of local heritage sites Acknowledgement of the role and value of National Trust volunteers Co-operative marketing with other tourist attractions to enhance visitation

3. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
   Dwindling volunteer base - the volunteers at the Mount Laura Homestead have done a magnificent job for many years but it it difficult to recruit new members (I understand many volunteer organizations face the same challenge). Lack of funding Ongoing recurrent costs Maintenance issues

4. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
   Encourage access to grant funding Ensure collections are sorted, stored and recorded appropriately - it is important to identify and catalogue all artefacts and objects to have a clear picture of what we actually have Ensure that donations made by the public are treated with the respect they deserve Education programs involving school groups Use of government funded programs to assist where possible (eg Work for the dole)

5. Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
   

6. Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
   The oldest buildings in the Whyalla area are the Point Lowly light house cottages, these are of great interest to visitors and are under the Whyalla Council's care and control. Visitors love to drive up Hummock Hill and look at the guns that protected the city during our shipbuilding days. We have a rich industrial heritage showcased by steelworks tours and the land-locked HMASWhyalla with the adjacent Maritime Museum. The preservation and promotion of our heritage in Whyalla goes hand in hand with the tourism industry which is vital to the economy. It is important that our heritage is promoted in a respectful manner and accessible to all.
