Heritage survey responses.

1. What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
   I believe Council has a very large role indeed in protecting and conserving heritage. Firstly, because there are many heritage buildings that are owned by Council. Others, that Council does not own, are under State jurisdiction. Council affects planning controls. Council can also do some surveying for lists and update the State Heritage list on some buildings.

2. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
   Most of the local heritage comes under state jurisdiction. However I would do all I could, in my role as Councillor, to support any measures that the state or local government undertake to protect and conserve local heritage.

3. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
   The Adelaide Hills Agrarian World Heritage bid. Council has looked at other World Heritage Agrarian Areas around the world and noted that it had been a big plus for those communities in terms of conservation but also with tourism and export of produce much enhanced. It has been estimated that for every dollar Council spends, the return could be in the thousands once the full effects are working for the district. The Adelaide Hills would be the first in the Southern Hemisphere and join some very well known and prestigious agrarian communities such as Tuscany in Italy.

4. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
   I’ll support the Adelaide Hills World Heritage bid. I’d also look forward to working closely with the National Trust regarding any issues of local heritage. I’ve grown up in the Hills and lived here most of my life. I believe it’s very important to look after Heritage buildings and gardens. I would support programs which protect heritage areas like Stangate House and Camellia Gardens and the like.

5. Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
   Yes, because I think it’s vital that Local Government has input on developments especially large ones. Large and expensive developments have an impact on the environment around them. So Council retaining development approval powers for projects of $3m in value is important for the interests of local residents and local heritage.

6. Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
   It is imperative that local heritage is maintained at a sustainable level. I have concerns for Heritage sites and would like to see them find sufficient funding to look after Heritage buildings and gardens. Overall, I’d like to see better funding options. Most importantly, I would like Council to provide more support for the volunteers that help look after heritage sites.
