Heritage survey responses.

1. What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
   Far too many historical buildings and cultural sites are left to the developer. I firmly believe in progress but not at the detriment of our past. Council has the power and should use it to limit the change or destruction of our heritage.

2. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
   I support the involvement of the local community in the decision making of our heritage sites. Local and state funding should be sought. In some instances, a roll of honour plaque could be used to encourage donations to a heritage project.

3. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
   We have a major project currently in progress at the Kapunda Copper Mine Site. Kapunda has the distinction of being the oldest copper mining town in Australia.

4. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
   I will advocate transparent decision making and informing ratepayers of planned changes to our heritage sites. To this end I will be providing a web site and posting this information on a regular basis.

5. Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
   Yes. After all, local government is at the coal face of these developments.

6. Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
   Kapunda is steeped in local traditions and the town has many heritage listed buildings and sites. It is not only important to maintain and keep these but also important to be careful not to spoil a building or site with inappropriate development adjacent to it.
