What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
Council has a significant leadership & management role to ensure the protection of Burnside's local history and the heritage buildings, parks, trees and other structures which are the community representation of this. A majority of our community value our heritage highly - indeed that is why many choose to live here - and expect that Council will ensure it's preservation in spite of the demands for urban consolidation on many fronts. As a current Councillor I have worked hard in this term to ensure all Council's policies & practices take account of and actively promote & facilitate the preservation of our Burnside heritage, which is under threat. If re elected I am committed to continue this work, the Heritage Awards and Heritage Grants Scheme funding to assist with maintenance of heritage tres and properties and also to do what I can to ensure that Council program's & funding are made available to increase the awareness of residents, schools, architects, planners and developers to ensure we protect our unique heritage.
What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
Active promotion of existing heritage and the promotion of it's value to resident, planners and the broader community. Active leadership by Council as the custodians of our heritage and appointment of appropriate staff in the administration.. Implementation of incentives eg Awards.
What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
Protection and conservation of Burnside's significant (Heritage) trees.
What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
Greater emphasis of heritage provisions in Councils Policies and Guidelines. Specific provisions for conservation of and tracking significant trees of which Burnside is custodian.
Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Yes - absolutely.
Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
Councils need to take their responsibilities as the custodians of our heritage very seriously and partner actively with the State government to protect it before it is lost.
