Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
Council should have a large role in decisions relating to the conservation and protection of both the built and natural environment, particularly when it comes to heritage status. These decisions should be fed by well supported and structured local residents groups thus encouraging engagement from local residents. When it comes to particularly important areas, such as the Tennyson Dunes, which now preserve the only example of the coastal dune system that once lined the shores of Adelaide, I believe councils should be empowered to make strong, lasting decisions. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
I would support the development of residential consultation and working groups, including representation of existing groups such as the Coastal Ecology Protection Group. I would support the development of educations packages that inform both local residents and those farther afield of the reasons behind conserving local heritage, and why its important that everybody play their part in this. I would also support the development of infrastructure that is complimentary to the protection and conservation of local heritage, by ensuring that proposed significant developments be discussed and approved at a community level - preferably using a consensus decision making model. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
The pending heritage status of the Tennyson Dunes. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
The heritage status of the Tennyson Dunes.Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Absolutely.Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
The Grange Ward has one of the most significant sites of biodiversity (the Tennyson Dunes) in South Australia, it is not something we should take lightly. This is a very hot topic for me and I will be working towards ensuring the heritage status of this unique and beautiful place.
