1. What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
   To recognise and celebrate the contribution natural and tangible and intangible cultural heritage makes to the community’s economic, physical and spiritual well-being, and empower the community to understand, respect, and espouse strong conservation and environmental values through practical, educational and enjoyable experiences and responsible and inspirational leadership.

2. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
   Early intervention before a site is threatened by inappropriate development / demolition Reversal of the burden of proof (first do no harm principle) to retain historic sites, including providing a mechanism for uninterested owners to fairly divest themselves of historic properties they have no interest in maintianing / conserving Advocacy for appropriate / adequate legislation, state and federal government resourcing Research and marketing of economic, social and environmental advantages of historic properties: - conservation of embedded energy and finite materials; - contribution to social cohesion and well-being - contribution to economic growth - contribution to sustainable development Millenium goals

3. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
   State and Federal Government lack of adequate resourcing for, and opposition to, meaningful effective heritage regimes for identification, conservation and protection of sites of natural and cultural significance (whether of local, state, national or world significance).

4. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
   - retention and improvement of the Adelaide City Council Heritage Incentives Scheme - establishment of a new rolling fund for restoration, covenanting and on-sale of historic properties to address market failure in a proactive cost-effective way, incorporating skills workshops and traineeships to upskill youth, disadvantaged, and unemployed in skills for maintaining and restoring historic sites - implementation of Donovan Rypkema's Historic Preservation model or Smart Growth, restoring historic buildings as incubators for small business to drive economic growth in a sustainable manner - membership of the League of Historical Cities ($100US per annum membership fee) to raise awareness and access elite international forum of historic cities who are promoting economic growth that preserves their special historical environment and their sense of difference - partnering with other organisations, businesses, individuals and community groups for specific projects - adoption of the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter as best practice in management and conservation of historic sites, including the Adelaide Park Lands

5. Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
   Absolutely - development by political whim and/or Ministerial fiat is a recipe for disaster and very damaging to the wellbeing of communities and the economic potential inherent in retaining a place's sense of difference and competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive global market.

6. Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
   The solution is leadership, clear, outspoken, and unequivocal, that the conservation of our natural and cultural heritage is imperative for our own well-being now and in the future, and essential for sustainable economic growth.
