Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
Council has an important role, particularly with Heritage PAR's and local character areas. Local Government is a creation of the State Government, however Local Government must vigorously and robustly advocate for heritage listings and conservation (Fort Largs as example)What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
I was recently a member of the Marion Heritage PAR Working Party for the Marion Council. I will support local character areas of merit. I am a supporter of the Marion Historical Research Centre voting for their funding and was chuffed to attend its opening. Additionally i have supported funding for the Marion Historic Village Display Centre and broader Marion Historic Village Project. I support the Warraparinga Cultural Centre and Fairford House.I support the Kuarna RAP and the indigenous cultural heritage benefits that will flow from that. A big heritage challenge in Marion is the Worthing Mine ruins, work to be done there! What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
Apart from development/demolition/planning approval. I would say a number of local character areas. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
Compliance for heritage listed properties (no accidental demolitions). Continue to lobby the State Government to list/retain local character areas. Continue to fund the Marion Historical Research Centre including staff. Fund the appropriate maintenance and renewal (as required) of the listed almond groves ,the Marion vineyard and Oaklands Estate table grapes.Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Yes, absolutely.Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
Monitor the 30 yr plan. Developers should not overly dominate our landscape. Heritage should include our old significant trees and retain the setting they are in.
