What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
The council still hold significant development approval powers and should use those with a view to preserving heritage. The Port Adelaide centre is in desperate need of redevelopment and we need residential in-fill urgently, I think the plan calls for 8,500 residents, this will then allow retail businesses to succeed in many of the now vacant and derelict shops in the Ports Main street. It is important that the council have an active role in that process to ensure that development occurs in a manner acceptable to the community and in way that enhances our heritage. We need change in a way that enhances our heritage.
What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
There need still be an ongoing discussion between the stakeholders, Property owners, developers, the State Government and the council. We need the council to an active part of that conversation.
What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
For me personally the most important heritage issues are maritime issues, reinstate Searles Boatyard in some form, protect and develop assets like the Falie, Nelcebee and the Annie Watt. revive the Cruickshank's Corner Maritime Park plan that was first proposed in the 70's, with the Fearless as the centre piece.
What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
While I accept that there are times when the final decision needs to be made at State government level, the community should have some part in all approval processes,
Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
Port Adelaide urgently need redevelopment but we need to do it in a manner that enhances our heritage assets.
