Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
Council has a pivotal role in protecting and conserving heritage. Whilst they may not have unlimited financial resources they need to have an allocation for the ongoing work of identifying and assisting with the preservation of our heritage. This however is not Council responsibility. state governments have I believe shirked their responsibility in this area and have relied far to long on the offices of the SA National trust to cover their butts. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
A portion of annual Council budgets should ideally be put aside to help conserve local heritage. Local heritage needs to be higher profile and tourist trails and signage in place to encourage people to explore our heritage and marvel at the ingenuity of previous generations in utilising our district. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
Maintenance of the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse. This is a mammoth task. Council has set aside funds for the next 5 years to assist with the ongoing maintenance of this iconic structure. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
Ongoing financial and in kind support for the lighthouse. In kind support for the museum at this stage.Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
I believe that it is imperative that local government maintains control. Outside bodies are not aware of significance of local heritage. However local government must seek information from outside agencies.Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
As a member of the National trust Kingston branch, past Councillor for the South east and on the Board of the National Trust I believe that it is necessary to preserve the heritage in our Council area but there needs to be a balanced approach to maintain the best heritage examples against those that are of lower priority and pose a drain on limited resources.
