Heritage survey responses.

1. What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
   Council's role in protecting and conserving heritage is dependent on a number of interrelated factors, whether we are talking about individual residences, community precincts or whole communities. Burra is a special heritage place because it is a declared State Heritage Area. The Regional Council of Goyder's role in protecting and conserving heritage in Burra is therefore vitally important.

2. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
   In my campaign leaflet for the forthcoming local Council Elections to be distributed shortly to every household in the Burra Ward I have stated the following: "I support the National Heritage List nomination for the Australian Cornish Mining Heritage Site (Burra and the Copper Triangle) and related UNESCO World Heritage Site proposal. On the 13th of June 2014 I attended 'The Economics of Heritage Forum - Why heritage matters to the economy', in the Barossa. In July 2014 I visited Georgetown in Penang Malaysia, granted World Heritage Listing in 2008. I would like to see a Burra Heritage Festival held annually during Heritage Week to celebrate and promote Burra and its contribution to the economic well being of South Australia". Some years ago I opposed an application for exploration/mining in the former Burra Mine Site and together with others lobbied extensively to prevent the application being successful. I support the former level of the provision of heritage advice given by Heritage Advisers connected to local Councils and have sought the advice of the former Heritage Adviser to the Regional Council of Goyder, Douglas Alexander, regarding my own home in Burra which is on the Burra Heritage Trail. The Heritage Fund was also important for individual householders to access to improve their properties in a sensitive manner in line with their existing heritage characteristics. The Regional Council of Goyder also needs to do much more to promote the importance of heritage to its own community in Burra including promotion of 'The Burra Charter'.

3. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
   The most important heritage protection issue in Burra is the importance of actively supporting and promoting the National Heritage List nomination for the Australian Cornish Mining Heritage Site (Burra and the Copper Triangle) and related UNESCO World Heritage Site proposal.

4. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?

5. Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
   This issue is an extremely complex and difficult one and I don't support all aspects of the current development approval process. I could not express my views adequately in the space provided. At present it would depend on the particular Council as to whether I agree or not that Councils should retain development approval powers for projects over $3m in value.
