Heritage survey responses.

1. What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
   Council must comply with all state and federal laws required by National Trust listed property and sites. Council should also be able to identify local sites that need to be preserved and not be told what we must do!

2. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
   Local heritage should be retained and kept in as is condition but not at the long term detriment of ratepayer. Federal and state funding must be available for upkeep of such, if something of is damaged considerably and can not repaired, that means it is not the original item then it should not be replaced, insurance will not cover such.

3. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
   Smaller local history items must be catalogued and stored correctly in a museum of some kind and should be displayed for public access, we have several National Trust significant sites in our area. We have had many centenary celebrations over the last many years and people are are asking who is going to take responsibility for care and control of our history.

4. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
   Compliance of regulation is essential but also costly. Public education programs are also required as so everyone understands the process.

5. Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
   We have not had many of those in our area, but definitely local involvment is essential.

6. Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
   Depreciation cost have a major effect on council financials and on heritage listed sites this is out of kilter with insurance and replacement costs. Protection of heritage should not disadvantage Council in development approvals and a common sense approach is required by all concerned.
