David Whiting
2014 candidate for Town of Walkerville.
Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
We have the pivotal role to play. Without Walkerville's Heritage Protection plan (introduced when I was Mayor) much of our heritage and history would have disappeared. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
Our development plan contains a list of protected properties together with contributory items and heritage conservation zones. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
There is no one single issue, we have taken a council wide approach to preserving our history and heritage. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
I believe our current policy is more than adequate to protect our heritage properties and sites.Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Absolutely, the State Government has argued that they have gone down this path because these developments are crucial to the state economy and councils are putting in place a roadblock to the economic health of the State. This is nonsense as there is usually avery good reason councils delay the approval process. Usually it is due to concerns form local residents and the effect these developments have on the broader community. This includes issues such as parking, traffic flows, over development of small sites and general amenity.Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
