Veronica Varga
2018 candidate for Campbelltown City Council.
Heritage survey responses.
Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
In agree in principle however it depends on the Council. A council heavily influenced by the real estate and developers lobby will not be capable of potecting our heritage. The reverse actually. We need a strong, independent government or LGA arm that will be effective in identifying and proteting our heritage. In your opinion, has the current system of local heritage protection served your community well?
Can't really say. Campbelltown has few heritage buildings but Lochend is a good example of preservation by the Council.Should councils reject proposals to list local places of historic merit simply because an owner objects?
Yes. Owners can change and this can endanger the local place of historic merit.Should neighbours of local heritage listed buildings have a right of appeal on development applications that propose demolition?
Absolutely.Should buildings listed as Contributory Items in your council area receive better protection?
Can't answer that one as I am not familiar with these items. My general answer would be yes.Do you agree that places proposed for listing by your council as Local Heritage or Contributory Items should be subject to review by DPTI? Or would reviews be more appropriately conducted by an independent source of expert advice?
No. If the Council and community are satisfied that should be it.Would you like to see your council work more closely with the National Trust of SA in protecting heritage, for example, by signing up as one of the Trust's Civic Partners?
Yes.What are your personal suggestions for improving the way your council handles policy and planning?
I dont have a clear idea of their practices but from the in-fill development with badly designed housing I would say there is room for a lot of improvement and you can't always blame the State government.Should councils actively encourage individuals to nominate places for consideration as local heritage?
yes
